The Astounding Fire Piston
Ancient fire-making technology almost as important
as the discovery of the wheel and the lever that has
been re-discovered....almost lost to history forever.
Just what is this fire piston... what does it have to do with cannons and why should I care about it???
The fire piston has almost nothing to do with cannons, but it will be very interesting to about anyone who has the least interest in fire, fire making, outdoors and survival. It would follow that if you are the least bit interested in really neat stuff and especiaqlly 100% reliable ancient technology, then the fire piston is right up your alley. Please read on......
A FIRE PISTON is something that you NEED in your camp. If you don't already know what a fire piston IS, then I invite you to Google the words "fire piston" and read up on HISTORY and what you have been missing. It is an incredible story of achievement by aboriginal peoples.
It is astounding to learn in these days that there is an ancient fire-making technology available to us that was almost completely lost to mankind. Fortunately, this technology has recently been re-discovered by a group of very astute history-minded people in the survivalist community. The fire piston was almost completely forgotten about, because of the invention of the friction match in the early 1800s'. The invention of the match all but eliminated plans then almost ready to mass manufacture and distribute fire pistons to every corner of the earth. Up to that point, the fire piston was already well known in Europe and in the islands of Southeast Asia, where it is strongly believed that the fire piston originated in some ancient time.
The influences of the fire piston did not die out however. One of its' greatest influences remain today, namely the compression-fired internal combustion engine. The basic application of this principle and the development of this type engine is attributed to none other than Rudolph Diesel. This engine type today bears his name.
It is a substantiated fact that Mr. Diesel applied for and recieved a German patent for the idea that an engine, built much like a basic gasoline engine (already in use at that time) could be fueled by a low quality oil, injected into the combustion area at the height of compression, and would be ignited by the same exact principle as the aboriginal fire piston very shortly after his return from the islands previously mentioned, where he had observed first-hand, the aboriginal people using fire pistons to start fires.
The fire piston is a very simple, rudimentary device that has only one moving part. With a single operation, the sudden, violent compression if air within the piston, well raise the internal temperature of that air (arouind 500 degrees F.) to light tinder placed inside the bore of the device. This tinder is very quickly withdrawn after ignition. It is found that upon withdrawal, the tinder is now a glowing coal. This coal is removed from the tinder cup or chamber in the piston head and the tinder is placed into a larger, previously prepared tinder ball and blown into a fire!
It is almost inconcievable that a fire can be reliably started, even in negative conditions or inclement weather, with so simplistic a device, using no flints, no electricity, petro-fuels or friction fire-making methods.
To those who have never witnessed the operation of a fire piston, the production of a glowing coal, is one of disbelief. To many observers, this phenomenon almost borders on wichcraft or what appears to be black magic.
Further instructions and historic material is available with purchase, or free upon request. The fire piston that we make, is, we believe currently the only fire piston being reproduced in the world that is in the configuration of a table model, all others being of the smaller, hand-held variety.
